The COURAGE TO WRITE grant program encourages and supports emerging voices.

Who Should Apply

We welcome applications from adult writers actively engaged in a writing project and for whom a monetary boost could help further or complete the project. Applicants can be writing in any genre.

Awards

In 2022 The de Groot Foundation will award seven unrestricted grants of $7,000 each to writers.

Eligibility

  • Applications are open to individual adult writers regardless of race, ethnicity, gender orientation, education, economic situation, geographic origin or location.
  • Applicants must be individuals. Companies or organization are not eligible.
  • Applicants must be over 18 years of age at the time of the application deadline.
  • Applicants must use their legal name, not a pen name.
  • Applications are not open to family, members of the board or employees of the The de Groot Foundation or the selection committee.
  • Applications must be submitted in English. Use Times New Roman 12-point font and double space your application document.

Your Application

Prepare the three parts of the application before starting the online application process.

1. A brief bio sketch of up to 120 words – this will be inserted into the application form.

2. The letter of application* (1-3 pages) must include:

  • An introduction to the writing project for which you are seeking support. (1 to 3 paragraphs)
  • How this project is important. (1 or 2 paragraphs)
  • How the grant will be helpful to you at this time. (1 - 2 paragraphs)
  • Anything else you would like us to know about you as a writer and your project. (1 paragraph)

3. Five pages* of a current, unpublished writing project. Do not submit previously published writing.

*The letter of application and the five pages of a current writing project will be uploaded as a single document. Please make sure your document is ready to send before uploading. Once you have submitted your application, you are unable to go back and change it.

HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION

   2) Click “create account and continue” to create a Submittable account (there is no fee to create an account) or log in if you already have an account.

   3) Complete the information form.

   4) Upload your letter of application and five-page writing sample as one file. PDF, Word, Docx, Doc files are accepted.

   5) Click "Submit"

   6) You will be directed to the administration fee payment details. You can pay by credit / debit card or PayPal.

   7) You will see a screen that says, “submission successfully submitted” and receive an email acknowledging receipt of your entry. 

Your application is complete when your application documents are uploaded and you have paid the submission fee. By submitting your application, you agree to the guidelines of this application process.
